The Bottlesnakes at Augusta Ramble — Ethan Leinwand

March 28 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Bottlesnakes, a St. Louis duo specializing in 20s and 30s piano/guitar blues from St. Louis and beyond, is the next featured act of the Augusta Ramble concert series. On Saturday, March 28, 7pm they will perform originals, blues, raucous stomps and ragged hokum.

Reverbnation.com says, “Together Nick Pence and Ethan Leinwand bring high energy and lowdown grooves. Their playing seems to intertwine as if it were one and their singing lays right on top of the other as if they were brothers. It is tried and true when a city tickler and a country picker get together something special is going to result.”
Special guest, Valerie Kirchhoff (the featured singer of Miss Jubilee), will also do a set with the Bottlesnakes. Valerie is one of the most sought after and recognizable singers in St. Louis and the greater region.

Doors open 7pm. Music begins 7:30. Cash bar and light snacks available.

Ethan Leinwand is a St. Louis-based barrelhouse blues pianist and preservationist. A student of the music’s rich history and varied regional styles, Ethan presents personal interpretations of many of the great (and forgotten) old-time masters. He specializes in St. Louis pre-war piano blues, Texas barrelhouse, Deep South barrelhouse, early Chicago boogie-woogie, and good-time hokum stride. His influences include: Little Brother Montgomery, Black Bob, Jimmy Yancey, Henry Brown, Peetie Wheatstraw, Aaron ‘Pinetop’ Sparks, Albert Ammons, Robert Shaw, Cooney Vaughn, Professor Longhair, and Carl Sonny Leyland. Originally from Middletown, CT, Ethan has spent time living in New Orleans and Brooklyn. He moved to St. Louis in the summer of 2014, and, connecting with the city’s thriving traditional music community and its deep piano blues heritage, quickly became a mainstay. In addition to his solo work, Ethan plays in multiple projects  including Miss Jubilee, The Bottlesnakes, and The St. Louis Steady Grinders.

Ethan performs throughout the United States and Europe, and is gaining recognition as one of the country’s leading exponents of barrelhouse blues piano. He has taught at The Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Workshop (WA) and lectured at The West Coast Ragtime Festival (Sacramento, CA). Other notable appearances include The UK Boogie Festival, The Brooklyn Folk Festival (NY), The LaRoquebrou International Boogie-Woogie Festival (France), The University of Chicago Folk Fest (IL),  The Arches Boogie-Woogie Stage (Cincinnati, OH), and Pianissimo Piano Festival (Nuremberg, Germany).
